La hormiga y el saltamontes

Once upon a time, in a green field, it was a beautiful summer day. A happy Grasshopper was singing and playing his violin. He was having a great time.
Érase una vez, en un campo verde, un hermoso día de verano. Un alegre saltamontes cantaba y tocaba el violín. Se lo estaba pasando de maravilla.

Nearby, a small Ant was working very hard. She was carrying a heavy piece of corn to her nest. She looked very tired.
Cerca de allí, una pequeña hormiga trabajaba muy duro. Llevaba un pesado grano de maíz a su nido. Se veía muy cansada.

"Why are you working so hard?" asked the Grasshopper. "The sun is shining! The weather is perfect! Come and sing with me."
—¿Por qué trabajas tanto? —preguntó el saltamontes—. ¡Hace sol! ¡El tiempo es perfecto! Ven y canta conmigo.

The Ant stopped for a moment. "I am storing food for the winter," she said. "When it is cold, there is no food in the field. You should do the same."
La hormiga se detuvo un instante. «Estoy almacenando comida para el invierno», dijo. «Cuando hace frío, no hay comida en el campo. Deberías hacer lo mismo».

The Grasshopper laughed. "Winter is very far away!" he said. "I have plenty of food right now. Don't be so serious!" He continued to sing and dance. The Ant continued to work.
El saltamontes rió. «¡El invierno está muy lejos!», dijo. «Ahora mismo tengo comida de sobra. ¡No te lo tomes tan en serio!». Siguió cantando y bailando. La hormiga siguió trabajando.

Soon, the summer ended. The leaves turned brown and fell from the trees. Then, the cold winter arrived. The ground was covered in white snow.
Pronto terminó el verano. Las hojas se volvieron marrones y cayeron de los árboles. Luego llegó el frío invierno. El suelo se cubrió de nieve blanca.

The Grasshopper was very hungry. He looked for grass, but there was none. He looked for seeds, but they were under the snow. He was freezing and weak.
El saltamontes tenía mucha hambre. Buscó hierba, pero no la encontró. Buscó semillas, pero estaban bajo la nieve. Se congelaba y se sentía débil.

He went to the Ant’s house. Through the window, he saw the Ants. They were warm and happy. They were eating the corn and grain they collected in the summer.
Fue a la casa de las hormigas. A través de la ventana, vio a las hormigas. Estaban calientes y contentas. Comían el maíz y los granos que habían recolectado durante el verano.

"Please, friend Ant," said the Grasshopper. "Can I have some food? I am starving!"
—Por favor, amiga Hormiga —dijo el Saltamontes—. ¿Me puedes dar algo de comer? ¡Me muero de hambre!

The Ant looked at him. "What did you do all summer?" she asked.
La hormiga lo miró. "¿Qué hiciste durante todo el verano?", preguntó.

"I sang and I danced," the Grasshopper replied sadly.
—Canté y bailé —respondió el saltamontes con tristeza.

"Well," said the Ant. "You sang all summer. Now, you can dance all winter!"
—Bueno —dijo la hormiga—, cantaste todo el verano. ¡Ahora puedes bailar todo el invierno!

The Ant did not give him food because she only had enough for her family. The Grasshopper learned a hard lesson: it is important to prepare for the future.

La hormiga no le dio comida porque solo tenía suficiente para su familia. El saltamontes aprendió una dura lección: es importante prepararse para el futuro.
